Jasim Uddin's acclaimed ballad, Nakshi Kanthar Math (1929), was rendered into English by E M Milford in 1939. Exposing the limes of modernity in a colonial nation, it stands outside in the vending machine of canonical accounts of Bengali literature. Out of print for about thirty years, Milford’s translation is being reprinted here in a modestly revised version.
